We tend to use "eu sou" to refer to permanent or long-term statuses, such as divorciado (divorced), casado (married), or viúvo (widower), while "eu estou" is often used to refer to temporary statuses, such as solteiro (single), namorando (seeing someone), or noivo (fiancé).
